Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) Dr RP Sharma has been conferred ‘Police Excellence Award’ by Foundation Police Research, New Delhi.
He received the award from Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vijay Goel during the International Police Expo and Conference at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi on Thursday (May 10).
Here is everything you need to know about Odisha DGP RP Sharma:
1. RP Sharma was born May 15, 1960 at Ajmer city of Rajasthan.
2. Before taking charge as the DGP, he served as the Director of Vigilance in Odisha.
3. A brilliant student, the Odisha DGP holds numerous degrees, including MBBS, LLB, M.A. in Human Rights, M. Phil in National Security and Strategic Studies, Intermediate Certificate course in French language, Fellowship in HIV Medicine.
4. He was even a student leader during his college days. He was elected the vice-president of All India Medical Students’ Association in 1981-82.
5. RP Sharma was inducted to the Indian Police Service (I.P.S.) in 1986 as a part of the Odisha Cadre.
6. He started his career as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) (under training) at Police Training College, Angul and Bubhaneswar.
7. Later he became the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Rayagada.
8. Between 1990-2001, he served as Superintendent Of Police (SP) in Kalahandi, Berhampur, Dhenkanal and Balasore.
9. Throughout his career, RP Sharma has served at almost all top cop posts, including Commissioner of Police in Bhubaneswar, Deputy Inspector General (D.I.G.) of Police, Crime Investigation Department (CID), Crime Branch and D.I.G. of Police, Central Range, Cuttack.
10. Dr. Sharma has served in United Nations (U.N.) Peacekeeping Mission in Haiti, Central America.
11. Dr. Sharma received the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in January 2010, Police Medal for Meritorious Service in January 2002, U.N. Peacekeeping Medal in 1997, Police Special Duty Medal in 2012 and Commendation Disc of National Security Guard (NSG) Director General (DG).
12. Dr. RP Sharma was felicitated with the Police Excellence Award for his “exceptional services to public and for protecting their rights for a better civil society in Odisha”.
13. He is the first Odisha Cadre IPS officer to receive this honour.
