Bhubaneswar, Feb 18(Odisha.in) Floral tributes were paid and gun salutes were given to Promod Kumar Satpathy, Asst. Commandant, Special Operation Group who was brutally killed by the Naxalites on Sunday during combing opetration at Gashma forests located on the borders of Ganjam, Nayagarh and Kondhmal districts.
Satpathy was among few SOG personnels who had undergone special combat training was a dare devil. He was known among the SOG and friends as ” Tiger “.
Born on 10th May, 1964 at Dadhibamanpur village under Binjharpur police station of Jajpur district, was son of late Subodh Satpathy who was also a deputy commandant.
Satpathy had joined police service on 1st January, 1987 as Deputy Subedar. After under going Commando course at N.S.G., Maneswar, Commando
course in Hazaribag and W.T. course at Border Security Force in Hazaribag, he joined in the S.O.G. on 1st March, 2005.
Satpathy had proceeded to Nayagarh on February 15 along leading a SOG assult team in 10 Hero Honda Motor Cycles.
He was the first person of SOG to reach Nayagarh after the Naxal massacare.
On getting information of Naxal hideout at he along with two SOG teams chased and continued firing for about 4 hours for which the Naxals could not be able to escape from their hide out.
Finally during encounter Satpathy along with Sepoy Satyanarayan Panda of OASP and Sushant Gouda, Personal Security Officer of S.P., Berhampur died on the spot.
Though Orissa Government is not sure about the casulity from the side of Naxals, they have got a big jolt with the death of Satpathy. Two other Sepoys of SOG have also been killed.
Besides Satpathy, Satyanarayan Panda Sepoy and Sushant Gouda, Personal Security officer of the Superintendent of police Berhampur have also died in the encounter.
Body of Assistant Commandant Satoathy was brought to his house inside the SOG campus on Monday and was paid a floral tribute.
Members of his family paid a tearful farewell to him. Talking to media persons his younger brother Nirmal Satpathy, who is serving as an Assistant Commandant in the Orissa Armed Police Service said though death of his elder brother has caused irreparable loss to the family, it has not broke the morale of family members.
He said, their father was also in the police and was a patriotic person. Nirmal said that he would join the SOG and will teach a lesson to the Naxals who were resorting to such violence.
Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik while expressing his deep condolence for the death of Satpathy and other SOG cadres announced that the State Government would pay Rs 5 lakhs gratitious relief for the Assistant Commandant’s family besides insurance money of Rs 10 lakhs.
The family members will get Rs 4 lakhs GR and Rs 10 lakhs from insurance.
