New Delhi, Oct.08 (Odisha.in) New Delhi based Odissi guru Surendranath Jena died Monday following a cardiac arrest, his family sources here said.
Jena who died at 8.15 am was 83. He is survived by his wife, three daughters and a son. He was the recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi award this year.
The sad demise of Guru Surendra Nath Jena was deeply mourned by the the Odissi gurus, disciples, dance lovers all over the State.
Jena who had a natural aptitude for dance and music from childhood had joined the Kala Vikash Kendra and studied Odissi under various gurus including Gurus, Mayadhar Rout, Kelucharan Mohapatra and others.
After qualifying for the degree courses in 1966, he moved to Delhi and joined the Triveni Kala Sangam as an Odissi Guru and has trained several students.
His style differs from those of other Gurus. One can see in his dances elements of folk forms with various sculptures.
