Jagatsinghpur,September 23( Odisha.in) Fear of Chikenguniya has gripped Nandigram village under Naugaon block in Jagatasinghpur district.
The village have a population of about 2000 and a large number villagers have been admitted in different Primary Health Centers (PHCs) for the treatment of the disease.
Panic gripped in the village and its nearby areas after a plumber of the village returned from Kolkota suffering from an unknown disease. Within a short span about 200 villagers including 40 children suffered from the same disease suspected to be Chickengunya.
After the cases of suspected Chickengunya reported in the village , a medical team from the district Government hospital rushed to the village and collected blood samples of at least 22 persons including ten children who were suffering from high fever, said Dr Sukadev Sethi the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO).
Many villagers have alleged that the authorities have failed to provide medical helps to most of the villages after the flood as a result many persons were suffering from some unknown diseases.
“Chikungunya is spreading its tentacles in the village as the authorities have failed to provide potable water to the people.. Due to shortage of drinking water, many villagers are being compelled to drink polluted water from the ponds and rivers.
Three tube wells in the village were not functioning since more than a year as a result the villagers are depending on only one tube well in the village “, alleged Manas Pradhan a village school teacher.
Many villagers were suffering from fever and joint pains which are considred as symptoms of Chikungunya . However, a team of doctors after visiting the areas opine that few persons could be classified as suffering from Chikungunya disease and other patients were suffering from water-borne diseases.
Alarmed by the situation, the senior government officials have directed the health officials to take serious note of the situation and treat all the patients. ”
The district health officials have been directed to visit the affected villages and prove medicines to all the affected persons”, said Dr Sethi Chief District Medical Officer.
Dr Sethi said that only symptomatic treatment is possible for the disease and the hospital stocked sufficient medicines to treat the patients. All the Primary health centers (PHCs) in the rural areas were provided sufficient medicines to treat the patients.
He has also urged the district administration to provide potable water to all the villages as soon as possible to check any water borne diseases.
“All the collected blood samples will be sent to Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Bhubenswer for further examination and diagonisis of the diesease”, added Dr Sethi..
