NEW DELHI, September 1 (Odisha.in ) Television viewers in Orissa may benefit from a new regulation issued by Telephone Regulatory Authority of India ( TRAI ).
There are thousand of people in Orissa who have been deprived of viewing channels like channels of their choice including ETV and India TV.
Because they are not able to make onetime payment for the Direct To Home connectivity from service providers like Dish TV, Tata Sky etc.
But now with the new regulation of the Telephone Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) they need not have to pay the full cost of DTH hardware at one time.
DTH operators will now have to offer subscribers rental or hire purchase schemes on hardware equipment, according to latest regulation on Quality of Service (QoS) issued for the DTH sector by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
According to TRAI any DTH operator must from now give the prospective subscriber all three options, including the last two, contrary to the practice so far in which the operators would only sell the equipment outright.
This makes the DTH initial connectivity similar to that of Cas (conditional access system), and will enable thousands of economically challenged homes to avail of private DTH service, who can now go for installments on the hardware equipment including set-top boxes (STBs).
Trai has also laid down severe restrictions on disconnections and says that the operator will neither be allowed to discontinue any channel, or the entire service, nor be allowed to disable the Set-Top Boxes without sufficient reason and proper notice.
And while no operator would be allowed to hike subscriptions charges for any subscriber till six months of the connection being given, the subscriber on the other hand would be free to shift to any other package offered by the DTH operator he is with, or from any other operator.
With availability of such options, now more viewers would be inclined to avail the DTH services in an economically backward State like Orissa.
