Bhubaneswar, Nov 17(Odisha.in)Authorities in Odisha have intensified steps to prevent bird strike at Biju Patnaik Airport in Bhubaneswar.

The Bhubaneswar airport is second most prone airport to bird strike  after Chennai, airport director Sharad Kumar told Odisha.in.

While the airport officials have intensified measures to keep the airport area free from birds, help of the local authorities have  been sought to keep the outside area close to the airport clean, he said.

Kumar said there are several slaughter houses, dumping grounds, and slums close to airport boundary and local civic authorities have been asked to clear them for safe flight operations.

“We are concerned with the problem” Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner Sanjib Mishra said.  While the BMC has initiated some steps, a special drive would launched within a week to clear the dumping ground, slaughter houses which are close to the airport, he said.

The Bhubaneswar airport has recorded over a dozen of incidents of bird strike on air craft this year. Officials said the birds are often attracted to the airport as area close to it is littered with animal body parts because of the slaughter houses.

The state and airport authorities have intensified vigil after a Bhubaneswar-bound flight was forced to make an emergency landing at Indira Gandhi International Air port at New Delhi following a bird hit recently.
