Bhadrak, September 10 (odisha.in) Bhadrak town police have registered a criminal case against Dr Pradip Kumar Nayak, an eye specialist in Bhadrak for allegedly removing an eye from a patient, police said on Monday.

According to town police, Satrughna Mohanty, 68 of Bamanbindha village in Bhadrak district has alleged in his complaint that Dr Nayak was treating for his infected left eye since August 24.

"Nayak conducted an operation in his left eye on August 26 in his own nursing home here. But when the bandage was removed from my eye on Wednesday, I was astonished as my left eye was completely removed," Inspector in charge of town police station Manoj Rout said quoting Mohanty's FIR.

"The doctor neither has taken consent from me nor from my relatives who were present during operation and I suspect the doctor has sold my eye," Satrughna alleged in his FIR.

Police after preliminary investigation have registered a case under section 338 of IPC. When contacted, Dr Nayak denied all the allegations.

"Satrughna was suffering from eye-ball infection disease. The infection was sufficient to even affect its surroundings and the other eye. Removal of that eye was the only treatment in medical science," Nayak added besides claiming he had written it in the prescription and taken due consent from the patient before the eye removal.

Meanwhile the doctors in the district and Indian Medical Association (IMA) have expressed their resentment against the police action and the patients' behavior.

"We will not go for any operation if the patients and police behave in such an inhumane way," said a government doctor requesting not to be quoted.
