Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the Narendra Modi government has set a target of providing LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) connection to 80 lakh households in Odisha by end of December this year.
Pertinently, LPG (cooking gas) connection has reached almost 58.55% Odisha households till May 1, 2018. In June 2014, the figure was only 20%, said the minister.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, 24.23 lakh LPG connections have been provided in Odisha.
The scheme, launched May 2016, aims to replace unclean cooking methods used in rural India with efficient LPG.
Recently, speaking at the Pradhan Mantri LPG Panchayat at Mangalajodi in Khurda district organized by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL), Dharmendra Pradhan informed that there are already four LPG bottling plants in Odisha, while three new ones will be set up at Khorda, Bolangir and Rayagada districts.
In 2017, as many as 177 new LPG distributors have registered themselves, making it a total of 775 cooking gas distributors operating currently across the state.
