Jaipur,Jan.10 ( Odisha.in )Drawing curtain on the long drama of hide and seek as well as legal battle, finally, Senior Orissa police officer BB Mohanty surrendered in the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate here Thursday, more than a year after his son Bittihotra jumped parole.
Bitti was convicted for allegedly raping a 26-year old German student at Alwar in March 2006.A First Track Court of Alwar had sentensed him to seven years imprisonmsnt.
Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate ( ACJM) Rajendra Kumar Bansal remanded Mohanty to Judicial custody and Mohanty has been lodged in Jaipur Central Jail.
Mohanty, who was suspended as director general of police (home guard and fire service) by the Orissa government, was wanted by the Rajasthan police for his alleged role in helping his son Bitti Hotra Mohanty ( Bitti ) jump parole in November 2006.
Bitti Hotra was allowed a 15-day parole to meet his ailing mother on November 20, 2006, but he did not return to jail.
Mohanti had gone into hiding and had been evading Rajasthan police for the past several months. Non-bailable warrants issued by the city court also could not be served on him.
On November 15 last year, a local court had declared the senior Orissa cop as an absconder and issued standing warrants against him under which he could be arrested at any time and at any place.
The court had also declared Bitti who had jump parole as an absconder and issued similar warrants against him.
The court had also sought details of the property owned by Bidya Bhusan Mohanty who was reported to be missing since August last year.
A case was registered by Rajasthan police against the IPS officer early last year for allegedly sheltering and concealing facts relating to his son who jumped parole on December 4, 2006.
Mohanty’s surrender honouring last week’s Supreme Court uinstructions have come as a great relief to both the Orissa Government and Rajsthan Government as well as to the police in both the States.
