Bhubaneswar, Nov.03 (Odisha.in) The police Commissionerate System was formally introduced in Orissa for the twin City Cuttack and Bhubaneswar, with the state government Friday appointing IG Police Rank officer Binoy Kunar Behera.
An official notification in this regard has been issued by the Home Department.
Behera , a 1982 batch Orissa Cadre IPS , is at present the Chairman and Managing Director, State run public utility major, Orissa State Road Transport Corporation.
The Head Quarter of the new Police Commissioner would be situated at Bhubaneswam official sources said.
Very soon two DIG Police rank IPS would be appointed as Additional Police Commissioners and and two SP rank IPS officers would be posted as per the Provisions of the urban policing Act. One Additional and Deputy Commissioner would be in charge of each of the cities for smooth functioning. It said.
Apart from the existing police stations in the twin Municipal Corporations, at least seven police stations functioning in the fringe area would be annexed to the new Police Commissionerate . The seven police stations include- Jatni, Balianta and Chandaka in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack sadar, Baranga, Choudwar, and Jagatpur.
Behera expressing his gratitude for being selected for the prestigious post, in his reaction said, “my priority would be how to create an atmosphere to make the police in the twin cities people’s friendly and to win the heart of the people to ensure peace”
Behera during his long career as an IPS officer has successful worked in various capacities like SP, bhubaneswar, Vigilance SP, Cuttack etc.
The urban policing system came into being following the adoption of a bill to this effect in the Orissa Assembly in December 2003 and subsequent presidential consent..
The new act first of kind in the state authorizes the Police Commissioner with adequate legal power and authority to dispose of cases of its own.
