Kendrapada, October 31 (odisha.in) Defeated by acute poverty, a landless dalit couple committed suicide by jumping in the river Devi in the village Baradia under Balikuda block in Jagatasinghpur district.
Raghu Jena (50) and his wife Chila Jena (45) took this drastic decision on Tuesday afternoon. Both the couple had been eking out their living by doing manual labour works in the village and its nearby areas.
But, as ill luck would have it, Raghu was suffering from fever for the last ten days. Due to shortage of money, he was not treated by any doctor by his wife.
Both the couple did not take anything for the last three days and quarreled over it. Finally they decided to end their lives, said Lovakanta Swain the president of district Krusaka Sabha said.
Police has seized the dead bodies of the couple and sent for postmortem.
