Malkangiri,October 18 ( Odisha.in ) Malkangiri police have started investigating into the Wednesday’s liquor tragedy in Motelguda village under Korkonda block of Malkangiri district, in which seven persons have died
by consuming home made liquor.
Malkangiri S.P. , Satish Kumar Gajbhiye told Odisha.in that police have visited that village Motelguda and Mediacal immediately to investigate the matter. They seized that used country liquor (Pendam) and sent the dead bodies to for postmortem.
Dist.Administration have sanctioned Rs 10 thousand as compensation to families of the deceased persons .
However, the villagers were demanding higher compensations for the families of the dead and also for the affected persons as they claim that the compensation granted by the Government is not enough.
The victims of the tragedy were Adama Madakami,Irima Padiami, Ura Madhi, Gnaga Raba,, Muka Raba, GangaMadhi and Parimal Haldar while five of them died in the village the last two persons died in the hospital. Rema Reba,(38years), GangaReba(35years) & JagaReba (40years ) are under medical treatment, but their condition is said to be serious.
According to the villagers and the Malla invited his relatives and some villagers to attend the feast at his home
and offerred them country liquour (Pendam) to drink.Ten of them were seriously affected and became senseless.
After sometimes 5 of them died . Rest of them were taken to Malkangiri hospital where two died and theree were struggling for life.
Talking to Odisha.in, on Thursday, Debi Prasad Mishra, Orissa’s minister of State for Excise denied allegations that the deaths of the tribals were due to consumption of spurious liquor.
He said the tribals had consumed ” home brewed ” liquor only. However he would be in a position to reveal about the
cause of deaths after getting reports from the Collector and Superintendent of Police, Malkangiri. The Exise Superintendent of the district has also been asked to submit a report.
