Keonjhar, September 22 ( Odisha.in ) An elephant was found dead inside paddy field near Barbil , in Keonjhar district located at a distance of about 350 kms from Bhubaneswar on Saturday morning. The elephant has died of electrocution .
This is the third elephant casualty during last four days. Earlier two female elephants were killed by a speeding goods train on Wednesday morning near Bansapani railway station located at a distance of about 15 kms from the present spot.
Because of continuous heavy rain , the forest officials have not been able to reach the spot of accident.
Though indiscriminate mining , growing industrial and transport activities and rapid deforestation for mining and industrial purposes have posed serious threat to the elephant population in this part of the State and the wildlife lovers and environmentalists were repeatedly raising voice against such activities, the State Government have not taken any action in this regard.
With death of this elephant , the number of elephants in the district have gone down to 46 which is lowest since 1995 census.
