Jajpur, September 15 (Odisha.in) Tension prevailed high in the Kalinga Nagar, the steel hub of Orissa in Jajpur district on Saturday following an accident in the Visa Steels plant in which Friday one person was killed.
The deceased has been identified as a contract worker of the plant.
Over thousand workers including contract labourers of the Visa Steels company Friday gheraoed the plant demanding compensation and a job on compassionate grounds for the next of the kin of the deceased.
They also resorted to cease work agitation after the incident. Production of the plant was hampered following to the cease work by the work force.
Sources said, the mishap occurred about 12.30 pm when the contract labourers was erecting fabrication work inside the plant premises on an iron beam about 30 feet above the ground of Visa Steels which was being carried out by Surabhi Construction, fell down. The worker is yet to be identified.
“After being seriously injured in the plant, the worker was initially rushed to the local government hospital at Danagadi in Kalinga Nagar. Later he was shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack where he was declared brought dead,” told R.C Padhi, Officer-in-Charge of Jakhapura police station.
As soon as the mishap news spread, thousands of workers gheraoed the plant, demanding ten lakh cash as compensation and a permanent jobs on compassionate grounds to the next to the kin of the deceased. Unrest among the workers and gherao of the plant was on when reports last came in.
Jajpur Superintendent of Police, D.S. Kute said, “Though the situation tense but under control in the Visa Steels premises. One platoon of armed police force has been deployed at the trouble site to avoid any untoward incident and ASP, Kartik Chandra Swain is camping at the site”.
