Kendrapada, August 24 (Odisha.in) The forest officials of Bhitarakanika national park have arrested a man for killing a spotted deer inside the forest near Bagulidiha village under Mahakalapada block in the district of Kendrapada, a forest official of the park said Friday.
The forest area comes under Bhitarkanika National Park. Haripada Mandal , a resident of seaside village Ramnagar allegedly killed a spotted deer Thursday night along with three other.
While forest officials arrested Mandal from the spot other persons managed to escape crossing a local river, a senior forest officer of the park A. Mishra told Odisha.in. The forest officials have also recovered 20 kilo grams of deer meat from the arrested poacher, he said.
Mandal was produced in a local court Friday where the judge rejected his bail petition. He has been remanded to jail custody. Ofifcials have sent the deer meat for medical examination.
The Bhitarakanika national park is home to about five thousand spotted deer. Their population is however rising in spite of rampant poaching as each year a female deer gives birth to at least two baby deer
