Kendrapada, August 21 (Odisha.in) Ganya Samantary, a senior Orissa Gana Parisad leader and the block chairman of Mahakalapada in the district of Kendrapada was arrested by police for misappropriation of funds of a local cooperative society, official said Tuesday.
Samantray was arrested Monday evening for the misappropriation of ten lakh rupees from Teragan cooperative society six years ago, officer in charge of the local Patkura police station Tapas Pradhan told Odisha.in.
Samantary along with five members had misappropriated the money when he was the president of the same society.
Recently the High Court had directed the police to file cases against the persons who misappropriated the funds from the society after hearing a writ petition filed by a member of the society.
Police has also filed cases against Surendranath Das the former secretary , Narayan Swain the secretary of Mahakalapada branch ,Biranchi Narayan Dhal former director of the society, , Adhikari Patitapaban Das another former director , Sarada Prasan Swain an accountant and the cashier Babaji Mohapatra.
However they managed to flee from their houses. Police is searching them.
The arrested block chairman was produced in the court of sub-divisional magistrate on Tuesday. The court rejected his bail application and remanded him into jail custody.
Debendra Sharma the president of district congress party and senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leaders of the district have demanded the resignation of the chairman after he was arrested by the police on the charges of looting funds of the society.
On the other hand, the president of district Orissa Gana Parisada (OGP) and Kendrapada MLA, Utkal Keshari Parida has alleged that with an ulterior motive the block chairman was arrested.
