Bhubaneswar, August 06 (Odisha.in) A deep depression in the Bay of Bengal and subsequent heavy rains in Orissa and Jharkhand resulted in an unprecedented flood in many parts of the two states including Balasore District of Orissa.
On the request of the Government of Orissa, Tata Relief Committee (TRC) rushed to Balasore District for rescue and relief operations, a TATA steel press release said Monday. .
At Balasore the devastating flood has left hundreds of villages and more then 1, 00,000 families homeless in four blocks of Balasore District.
The Special Relief Commissioner, Govt. of Orissa requested for TRC’s intervention and advised to initially concentrate on providing Temp Shelters to at least 5.000 families.
Acting on his advice, TRC started the emergency relief operation from 10th July 07 by distributing polythene sheets along dry ration. Around 30 volunteers from Jamshedpur and Sukinda, helped TRC in this yeomen service.
The needy people were identified by the respective Tahasildar and our volunteers helped in distributing the materials. Necessary help was also given to erect the tents.
Two distributing centers each in the following four blocks were simultaneously operated. District Administration requested TRC for further 5000 shelters, since a very large population could not be covered.
The sporadic and intermittent rainfalls have added further to the miseries of people. TRC completed the same on July 27. TRC has provided the help to 3500 families in Bhogarai block, 2360 families in Basta block, 2000 families in Baliapala block and 1640 families in Jaleshwar block. In this relief operation, the TRC has covered about 180 villages.
The District administration, the public representatives and the villagers have expressed their great appreciation to TRC for the timely help.
Meanwhile, Tata Steel has initiated relief distribution work again at the rain affected areas of Jajpur District. The recent deep depression in the Bay of Bengal on Saturday has devastated many areas of Jajpur district apart from other parts of Orissa.
